A Rocha Canada's project locations

Since our national organization formed in 1999 in British Columbia’s lower mainland, A Rocha Canada has been working to create local projects across Canada focussed on conservation research, environmental education and building community.

Field study sites

Launched in late 2003, A Rocha Canada’s first field study site is located on the Little Campbell River south of Vancouver, British Columbia. Activities in this urban-agricultural area focus on the fish, birds and wildlife of the river basin and nearby Boundary Bay, rated Canada’s top Important Bird Area (IBA). Our field study centre welcomes short- and long-term volunteers and also houses our national office.

Established in late 2004, the Pembina Valley Biodiversity Project near Winnipeg, Manitoba works in the aspen-oak forests, grasslands and agricultural fields of the Pembina Valley, site of Manitoba’s premier hawk migration each spring. Long-term plans are to establish a field study centre in the area.

Partner locations

A Rocha Canada is also working with other partner organizations for the conservation and protection of key sites. This includes work to conserve and manage land and assist with environmental education at Pioneer Pacific Camp on Thetis Island, British Columbia and at Trinity Western University, both at their Langley, British Columbia campus and at the Crow’s Nest Ecological Research Area on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia.

Community groups

A Rocha Canada also works to foster community and local conservation action across the country. Community groups allow those who are not close to a Field Study Centre to gather with like-minded individuals. Activities might include taking nature walks, attending lectures, organizing local creation care conferences, listening to A Rocha conference CD's as a study/discussion group, or participating in our annual A Rocha Canada Birdwatch.

Find or start a community group in your area. You can contact the national office for more information about the community group nearest you. Presently, community groups have emerged in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario.
