Fire and rain

Burnt trees on the Serra de Monchique

Burnt trees on the Serra de Monchique

Last year's fires and floods in Portugal and France have caused some of the affected landowners to think anew about the best ways to manage their land. A Rocha is glad to be involved in these discussions and we are hoping for decisions which will benefit the local flora and fauna.

Birdwatchers needed:

A Rocha Czech need qualified ringers and birdwatchers from 27 May - 6 June and 24 June - 3 July. Plans include mist-netting at a known flyway in a valley near the Polish border; recording all species seen and heard along transect routes; and monitoring, mapping and ringing Corn Crakes Crex crex, working with Czech ornithologists. Contact czech@arocha.org for more details.

Migration in Lebanon

Despite the sudden rise of tension in the region, the A Rocha survey of spring migration has made a good start. So much remains to be understood about migration through this beautiful country.

Otters return

European Otter

European Otter

After an absence of nearly 40 years, the European Otter Lutra lutra has been seen at the Aammiq Wetland, A Rocha's study site in Lebanon. One of the reserve staff recently enjoyed a brief sighting, and in April, the visiting A Rocha France Scientific Officer, François Tron, found otter spraints. The otter's presence is a sign that this very important wetland is becoming increasingly significant for scarce mammals, amphibians, birds and other animals.

Discovering Spring!

Children and daisies
Many hundreds of children will have new and exciting experiences watching wildlife with A Rocha team members this month, especially in Canada, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Lebanon and the UK where spring is now well underway. Some children will be up early to hear their first dawn chorus; others will be taking part in after-school clubs, or will visit an A Rocha study site with their class for curriculum-based activities.

A surprise in the night!

Red-necked Nightjar, Caprimulgus Ruficollis
Photo by Steve Bird, Birdseekers Tours - http://www.birdtours.co.uk/birdseekers/

Members of the A Rocha France team had a surprise on 14 June when they heard a Red-necked Nightjar Caprimulgus ruficollis calling in the Vallée des Baux. If confirmed, this will be only the second record for France in 150 years! The other record was of a bird found dead in the same area in 1997. Could a few Red-necked Nightjars be breeding there? The valley is particularly rich in large insects, so the team will be out looking and listening this summer.

Living differently

Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury
Last month the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, warned that damage being inflicted on the planet was "making the human future more and more precarious" and could ultimately put "our viability as a species at risk." He called on Christians to live differently and afterwards, Dave Bookless, the Director of A Rocha UK, commented, "I listened to Archbishop Rowan's speech with delight. His challenge to Christians to subvert society's values concerning the environment provides a foundation that A Rocha UK and its supporters build on." http://www.archbishopofcanterbury.org/sermons_speeches/2004/040705.html

Research at Sabaki River Mouth, Kenya

Simon Valle birdwatching at the Sabaki River Mouth
The Sabaki River (Kenya's second-longest river) reaches the sea 5 km north of Malindi. The sandbanks, mudbanks, dunes, freshwater pools and marshes are of vital importance to roosting and feeding gulls, terns and waders, particularly Sooty Gull, Saunders' Tern, Lesser Crested Tern and Madagascar Pratincole. The estuary is also a fish nursery. At present the area is unprotected and threatened by human disturbance and over-fishing, though designated as an Important Bird Area. A Rocha Kenya has just received funding for a research programme aimed at highlighting the importance of the river mouth and hopefully leading to its conservation. Another research ornithologist is needed to join the programme.

Putting up the mist nets at Mida Creek

A Rocha Kenya's field study centre on the coast at Watamu, near Mida Creek (an Important Bird Area where 65 aquatic bird species are regularly recorded) was the perfect venue for the first waterbird ringing course to be held in Africa. Funded by the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement and Highlands Ringing Group (Scotland) and organised by AFRING (African Waterbird Ringing Scheme) based at the Avian Demography Unit of the University of Cape Town, 8 participants came from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Ghana. The trainers were Colin Jackson (Director of A Rocha Kenya) and Doug Harebottle and Dieter Oschadleus from South Africa. About 230 waders were caught and ringed during the week, including a Broad-billed Sandpiper Limicola falcinellus, a rare winter visitor to East Africa. For the full report, see http://web.uct.ac.za/depts/stats/adu/safring/kenya2004.htm

Fall colors in the Pembina Valley

The Canadians are still fund-raising for their first field study centre, established earlier this year in British Columbia, but already they are looking eastwards. Their Director and Scientific Director visited the aspen-oak forests, grasslands and farmland of the Pembina valley in Manitoba this fall. Here they met with the group planning a new A Rocha project in a new place, but with the familiar commitments to conservation, community and cooperation.

Protecting Kenya's coastal forest

A view from the new canopy platform.

A view from the new canopy platform.

This canopy platform has recently been built in the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, one of the most important forests for bird conservation in the whole of mainland Africa.

It is just one of several major tourist attractions initiated by A Rocha Kenya as part of their ASSETS programme - an innovative project which discourages illegal logging by impoverished local communities by providing them with real, long-term benefits from the forest's survival. Income generated by eco-tourism enables their children to attend secondary school. Want to know more? See the ASSETS website: http://www.assets-kenya.org

A Rocha in Bangkok

A temple in Bangkok

A temple in Bangkok

An A Rocha team was in Bangkok from 17-25 November for the IUCN World Conservation Congress. They joined 6000 delegates from 160 countries for ten days of intensive discussion and meetings during which the crisis facing wildlife around the world was confirmed by nearly every organisation, whether governmental or NGO. A Rocha/IUCN staff member Janice Weatherley coordinated a Conservation Platform on Faith, Poverty and Conservation (jointly organised with the World Bank) which reached the front page of the Bangkok Post. Buddhist and Moslem conservation groups had been invited to contribute to the debate which was greatly appreciated by our Thai hosts at a time of racial tension. There was a lot of talk during the congress about values and ethics. As a conservation NGO with a Christian identity, A Rocha is convinced that people treat the world according to what they believe about it. So a framework of belief inevitably underlies values and ethics for us all, whether we are religious or not.
