A Rocha projects can make a difference. In Portugal, A Rocha has trained over 400 volunteers and many former students continue to be active in environmental issues.

The database at our centre in Portugal now holds records of over 60,000 birds ringed, while extensive studies of plants and fungi, moths and butterflies have given a firm basis for influential reports and articles on the Algarve's environment. Proposals for reserve status for the Alvor Estuary stem directly from A Rocha studies.

Thousands of visitors have taken part in the environmental education programmes, and experience gained in these early projects has been invaluable as we have moved into new areas.
