Grow Bags

Printable PDF Version

Seeds are a beautiful illustration of God’s love for us through Jesus Christ. Jesus said before his death “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” (John 12:24) Jesus died on the cross. He was buried, just like a seed is buried in the soil. Jesus rose again, just as a seed grows into a new plant and produces fruit. His new life conquered sin and death and now we can also live. God’s spirit produces the fruit of “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galations 5:22) in our lives. By trusting Him to forgive our sins, we also can have eternal life.

Watching Seeds Grow

The following directions for making grow bags come from the “Green Earth Guide” published by the America the Beautiful Fund.

Grow bags are a way to grow flowers or herbs inside during the winter months. They also make great gifts and are easy to make with children.

Materials Needed

  • Low growing plant seeds
  • Plastic (Ziploc) sandwich bags
  • Fabric scraps (approximately 8 ½ inches wide by 14 inches long)
  • Fabric paint to decorate fabric
  • Sewing equipment (needle, thread and scissors OR sewing machine)
  • Small stones
  • Your own growing mix/potting soil made of 1/4 compost or dried manure, 1/4 sand, 1/4 perlite and 1/4 soil (or any complete nutrient potting soil)

Directions

Grow Bags
1. Measure the plastic bag and cut the fabric one inch larger on each side. Cut it so that the material wraps around the bag from the top of the bag, under the bag and back to the top (see illustration).

2. Sew up the sides of the fabric to form a bag.

3. Put small stones into the plastic bag so that they barely cover the bottom, and then fill ¾ full with potting soil.

4. Put about six seeds across the top of the grow bag, cover them with a small amount of soil and water them.

5. Put the plastic bag into the fabric bag, set your grow bag on a window sill and enjoy watching the plants grow.
